Overview
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a a 5-year programme consist of pre-clinical and clinical phase. In the first 2 years, students will be based in Kuala Ketil Campus and in the next 3 years, teaching will be conducted in several government hospital; Hospital Kulim, Hospital Tuanku Fauziah (Kangar), Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim (Sg Petani), Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (Alor Setar), Kota Setar District Health Office and health clinics under Ministry of Health in Kedah.
Didactic combination strategy is implemented throughout the learning process; lecture, tutorial, practical (laboratory and field work), seminar, Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Team-Based Learning (TBL). The combination between traditional and innovative approaches is hoped to elevate student’s motivation in a long run. In addition, it will furnish their soft-skill in term of public speaking, self-confidence, communication skill and well-balance emotion.
In Year 3, 4 and 5 students will be divided into smaller groups and posted in government hospitals. They learn from bed-side teaching, ward and clinic round, seminar, and case presentations. Students will also have an opportunity to serve for rural community in their community service programme and do elective posting anywhere in the world for 4 weeks duration.
When other universities are fully changing anatomy learning into 3D platform, in UniSHAMS we still have 11 full cadavers for students to explore human body during teaching and learning session which will be conducted in the dissection hall. Students will be able to learn from the real human body in addition of 3D anatomy app, 2 museums for anatomical and pathological exhibits, 3 well-equipped multipurpose laboratories and 2 Clinical Skill-Laboratories.

Pass Matriculation / Foundation in Science / Pre-Medical Program with a CGPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) in THREE (3) subjects: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics/Mathematics; AND

Minimum grade for each subject is C (CGPA 2.0); AND

Pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) / O level with at least 5Bs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics / Additional Mathematics, and ONE (1) other subject; OR

Pass Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) with BBB, ABC, or AAC or CGPA 3.0 (out of 4.0) in THREE (3) subjects: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics/Mathematics; OR

Pass Diploma in Health Sciences with a CGPA of 3.5 (out of 4.0); AND Pass SPM / O level with at least 2Bs in Biology and/or Chemistry and/or Physics; AND achieve THREE (3) credits in English, Mathematics / Additional Mathematics, and ONE (1) other subject; OR

Pass Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) in Health Sciences / Pure / Applied Sciences; OR

5. Is the MBBS programme taught in English?
Yes, the primary medium of instruction is English, although students will also receive exposure to Arabic through specific university-mandated courses.
6. What are the career prospects after graduating from MBBS at UniSHAMS?
Graduates are eligible to apply for housemanship (internship) within the Malaysian hospital system. Upon completing their internship, many alumni pursue specialization through Master’s programmes or parallel pathway training both locally and internationally, while others transition into private practice or venture into academia as lecturers and researchers.
